Window restrictors save lives – please don't remove them
We're reminding residents about the importance of window safety following recent reports of a tragic incident elsewhere in the UK involving a young child who fell from a tower block window.
Window restrictors are fitted in many of our homes to help prevent windows from opening beyond a safe limit and to reduce the risk of falls. They are an important safety feature, particularly in higher-rise buildings and homes where children may be present.
To help keep residents safe, we carry out regular inspections and maintenance of window restrictors. It is therefore essential that residents allow access when appointments are arranged so that these important safety devices can be checked, serviced and, where necessary, repaired or replaced.
We also ask residents not to remove, damage, bypass or interfere with window restrictors. Altering these devices can significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death from a fall.
If you believe a window restrictor is damaged, missing or not working correctly, please report it to us as soon as possible so that we can investigate and arrange any necessary repairs.
How you can help keep your household safe
- Never remove or tamper with window restrictors.
- Report any damaged or faulty restrictors immediately.
- Supervise young children around open windows.
- Keep furniture, beds and other items that could be climbed on away from windows where possible.
- Allow access for scheduled inspections and maintenance visits.
