Residents and Board Members Get Talking
In June, we held our first Board Member Drop-In Session, giving residents the chance to meet directly with Board Members and members of the South Essex Homes Executive Team.
The event was organised in response to resident feedback asking for the Board to be more visible, approachable and accessible. We wanted to create an opportunity for residents to have open conversations, share their experiences and talk about the issues that matter most to them.
What residents told us
The feedback we received was extremely encouraging. Everyone who attended said they felt listened to and were able to discuss the topics that were important to them.
Residents described the sessions as a positive first step in bringing residents and decision-makers closer together.
One resident said, “I felt more positive about the concerns I have being heard and acknowledged.”
Another commented, “This is a really good first step to break down barriers between residents and the Board.”
Many residents also said they would like to take part in similar sessions again in the future.
What the Board learned
Board Members found the sessions equally valuable. Hearing directly from residents helped them better understand what life is really like for residents and the challenges people face day to day.
The conversations also highlighted the passion and knowledge that many residents have about their communities. In fact, some attendees expressed an interest in becoming more involved in shaping services and representing the resident voice in the future.
What could we do differently?
As this was our first event of this kind, we also asked for suggestions on how we could improve future sessions.
A common theme was creating a more informal atmosphere. Ideas included:
- Holding sessions in community venues rather than formal meeting rooms.
- Offering tea, coffee and biscuits.
- Creating opportunities for residents and Board Members to chat informally, alongside booked appointments.
- Encouraging a more relaxed setting to help people feel comfortable.
Some residents also felt it would be helpful to receive feedback after the meeting, particularly when concerns or issues had been raised, so they know what happens next and who is taking ownership of any actions.
Looking ahead
The drop-in session was designed to make the Board more accessible and to strengthen the connection between residents and those making decisions about services. The feedback shows that this approach is valued and that residents want more opportunities like this in the future.
Thank you to everyone who attended and shared their thoughts. Your feedback is helping us shape future resident engagement activities and ensuring that resident voices remain at the heart of what we do.
You asked for more opportunities to speak directly with Board Members. We listened, and this was the first step. We look forward to continuing the conversation.
