Building Community, One Event at a Time
The spirit of community was on show at Longbow and Sherwood Way at the end of the summer holidays as residents came together for a busy Community Fun Day led by residents, for residents.
The event was possible thanks to funding from the South Essex Homes Community Fund, which was awarded to the project earlier this year. What began as a shared goal between residents to create more chances for neighbours to connect, grew into a great day packed with activities, entertainment and community fun.
Turning an Idea into Reality
Before the event, residents spoke about why they applied to the Community Fund and their hopes for the future of the neighbourhood.
For Chanelle, one of the residents behind the project, the inspiration came from wanting to create more things to do for local families.
"There's nothing to do around here for kids," she said. "They're all cooped up and people need to get out of their houses and meet their neighbours."
Chanelle also told us about when she presented the project to the Community Fund panel.
"At first I was a bit nervous, but once I started talking it was okay, and they asked me questions which helped."
When asked what advice they would give to other residents wanting to make a positive difference where they live, the group shared a simple but important message.
"You need patience," said Chanelle.
"Dedication," added Alison.
"And passion as well, you need to care about your community," said Rose.
Chanelle also told others to, "Have confidence in yourself."
Looking to the future, residents hope this is just the start, "The more contributions we get, the more ideas we get, the bigger and better we get," Chanelle said.
A Day Packed with Fun
The Community Fun Day had something for all ages, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere all day.
Families enjoyed face painting, arts and crafts, bracelet making, and the chance to decorate their own phone cases with glitter and charms. Local charity ATF delivered sports and creative activities, keeping children entertained while helping them to get active.
A special guest appearance from Sammy the Shrimp, Southend United's team mascot, was a popular attraction, while Essex Police Community Safety Officers visited in their van and spent time talking with residents and children.
Community engagement was also part of the event. A local artist invited residents to share their ideas for a new community art project, Flowers for Towers, while South Essex Homes staff, from the Complaints Team and Estate Services team, were on hand to speak with residents.
Adding to the fun, a resident DJ played live music throughout the day. Food and drinks were available for everyone, with sweet goodie bags handed out and a raffle taking place later in the afternoon.
One attendee said, “Seeing communities come together, having fun and making memories is something really special.”
A Strong Community Spirit
The residents were very happy with the positive response from their community.
"There's more people here than I expected, it's gone really well," said Rose.
Rose was keen to point out the hard work of fellow resident Chanelle, who led the planning and organisation of the day.
"The more people we get involved, the better we can get, as then it's no longer down to one individual."
The success of the Community Fun Day showed what can be done when residents come together with a shared goal.
