Supporting Safer Communities During the World Cup

As the World Cup begins, many of us will be looking forward to the weeks ahead - spending time with friends and family, sharing in the excitement, and celebrating the game. Football brings people together through pride, passion and a strong sense of community.

However, there is an important issue we cannot ignore.

Evidence shows that domestic abuse incidents can increase during major football tournaments - rising by 26% when England play and up to 38% when England lose. What should be moments of celebration can, for some, become times of fear and harm.

At South Essex Homes, we are committed to supporting safe, respectful communities. We are proud to be a Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) accredited organisation, demonstrating our commitment to improving how we respond to domestic abuse and support those affected.

Supporting awareness

This year, the Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board (SETDAB) is raising awareness through its World Cup campaign, highlighting the impact of domestic abuse during major sporting events.

We encourage you to watch and share their campaign video:

By raising awareness, we can all play a role in recognising the signs of abuse and supporting those who may be affected.

How you can help

  • Check in on friends, family or neighbours if something does not feel right
  • Speak up safely or report concerns
  • Challenge harmful attitudes and behaviour
  • Help create a culture where abuse is never accepted or ignored
