Don't Let Your Ride Spark A Fire

E-bikes are very popular because they are eco-friendly, affordable, and easy to use. Riding an e-bike can even help you stay healthy! But did you know these devices can cause fires if they are not used safely?

Most e-bikes use lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are usually safe, but if they are damaged, poor quality, or used incorrectly, they can catch fire. Fires caused by these batteries can start suddenly, spread very quickly, and are very hard to put out. Sadly, some fires have led to serious injuries and even deaths.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: If you live in a high-rise building, you are not allowed to bring e-bikes or e-scooters into your home.

Why Do Fires Happen?

Fires often happen when batteries are:

  • Fake or poor quality
  • Damaged or broken
  • Charged with the wrong charger
  • Charged or repaired with parts that don't match
  • Made by companies that don't follow safety rules

If a battery catches fire, do not try to put it out yourself. Leave the area straight away and call 999.

What About Mobility Scooters?

Mobility scooters also use rechargeable batteries, but not all of them use lithium-ion batteries. Some use other types, like lead-acid batteries. It's important to know what type of battery your scooter has because the safety advice can be different.

If you're not sure, check your manual or our Fire Safety Manager is always happy to help.

How to Stay Safe

It's important to check your battery regularly for signs of damage, such as swelling or cracks, and keep it away from heat sources like radiators or direct sunlight. Old or damaged batteries should never be thrown in household bins, take them to a recycling point or contact your local council for advice. Installing a smoke alarm in the area where you charge your device adds extra protection. If you ever notice smoke, overheating, or strange smells, unplug the charger if it's safe to do so, move away, and call 999 immediately.

You can also follow these easy tips to reduce the risk of fire:

  • Buy from trusted shops or websites and check reviews.
  • Look for safety marks like UKCA or CE on the product.
  • Follow the instructions for charging, storage, and maintenance.
  • Charge in a safe place, away from doors or escape routes.
  • Never cover the charger or battery while charging.
  • Charge when you are awake and at home, never overnight.
  • Unplug the charger when the battery is full.
  • Always use the correct charger for your battery.
  • Stop using the battery immediately if it smells, smokes, gets very hot, or makes strange noises.
  • Don't try to change or tamper with the battery yourself.
  • Only use parts recommended by the manufacturer for repairs or replacements.
