Community Groups

We are lucky enough to work with lots of different groups here in Southend.  Here is an introduction to some of them...

Achieve. Thrive. Flourish.

Here at South Essex Homes, we understand that we are living in challenging times, with people dealing with financial hardship and lots of other pressures. Residents in some areas have told us that don’t always feel safe living in their communities and that concerns about anti-social behaviour or even criminal activity affect their ability to fully enjoy their homes and neighbourhoods. We want to change this and help residents feel happy and confident.

ATF at Shoebury ParkSo, we have asked ATF to start working in three areas of Southend. ATF have made a real impact in other areas, where parks that were considered to be ‘no go’ areas have been taken back by communities and are now safe and happy places for local people and families to use.

As well as this, the work that ATF does focuses on helping young people, who might have been at risk of causing problems in their neighbourhood, to get involved and make a positive contribution to their areas. Through volunteering and accessing training, these young people have developed new skills and have gone on to secure jobs and ‘pay it forward’ by sharing their experience with other youngsters.

ATF black and white logo ATF have already made a great start to getting these community projects underway in three of our estates in Shoebury, Eastwood and Westcliff and we are confident that they will continue to make a real difference for the people living in these areas.

We would urge all residents to get involved! Find out more on their website here: About ATF — Achieve Thrive Flourish

Southend Tenants & Residents Federation

South Essex Homes has close links with the Southend Tenants & Residents Federation (STRF).  STRF Christmas Party

STRF was set up to support South Essex Homes when it first formed in 2005.

Membership of the STRF is automatic to all Southend City Council/South Essex Homes tenants, residents, leaseholders and any other authorised person residing within a tenant, resident or leaseholder’s property.

The aims and objectives of STRF are to discuss general matters and city wide issues, make informal judgements and appropriate recommendations, identify solutions to help improve the external and internal image of STRF, develop local pride amongst the residents and to make improvements to local services, which affect the quality of housing in their area and the local community.  They also promote various activities, both recreational and educational, that will enhance the lives of residents and further develop community spirit and to encourage decisions reflecting the needs of the local community.

They also monitor Focus Groups dealing with maintenance, improvements and developments to Council properties within the City of Southend on Sea.  They represent the Tenants and Resident’s Associations and partnerships in the borough and also advise and support, where able, all tenants and leaseholders of Southend Tenants and Residents Federation logoSouthend on Sea City Council/South Essex Homes.

Focus Groups

South Essex Homes holds 'Focus Groups' with residents, to ensure that residents are involved in the work that we do.

The Focus Group meetings, which are held in different frequencies according to the need, give tenants the opportunity to have a say in service delivery and voice their opinion in an environment which ensures that the right people receive feedback from tenants and can adjust plans accordingly.

Due to the pandemic we have not been able to meet with our residents face to face as the safety, health and wellbeing of our residents and staff is paramount.  This situation has however given us the opportunity to meet with some residents online and the feedback has been very positive.  We will be looking at combining face to face and online meetings, giving greater access to our residents in helping us shape our services.

At present, Focus Groups exist for the following service areas:

  • Disability & Carers
  • Income Management

  • Leaseholder

  • Planned Maintenance

If you have an interest in any of these subject areas and would like to find out more, please contact the Resident Engagement Team via email to
